Sri Lanka Trekking & Hiking Tour – 12 Nights 13 Days is an exciting adventure that takes you through some of the island’s most beautiful natural landscapes. Trek across misty mountains, scenic tea plantations, tropical forests, and breathtaking national parks while enjoying panoramic views and rich biodiversity. Along the journey, you will also experience Sri Lanka’s vibrant culture by visiting ancient temples, traditional villages, and historic sites. With expert local guides and carefully planned routes, this tour offers the perfect blend of adventure, nature, and cultural discovery.
Upon your arrival at the airport, you will receive a warm welcome and meet your driver/guide in the arrivals lobby. You will then transfer to Negombo, located about 10 km from the airport, with a travel time of approximately 30 minutes. After reaching Negombo, you will explore the town and visit highlights such as the Old Dutch Fort, the lively fishing harbor and fish market, the historic English church, and the scenic Hamilton Canal. After the short city visit, you will proceed to your hotel for check-in. Please note that the standard hotel check-in time is 2:00 PM (14:00). You may relax and unwind after your journey while preparing for the adventures ahead.
After breakfast, travel to Minneriya (159 km / approx. 3 hours 30 minutes) and enjoy an exciting afternoon safari in Minneriya National Park. Covering about 8,889 hectares, the park is known for its rich dry-zone wildlife and is especially famous for large gatherings of wild elephants. During the safari, you may also spot many bird species, reptiles, fish, butterflies, and the rare bamboo trees unique to the park. After the safari experience, continue to your hotel (14 km / approx. 30 minutes) for check-in and relaxation.
Early in the morning at 05:30 AM, begin the climb to the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress (optional with packed breakfast). Built in the 5th century AD, this magnificent rock citadel was the royal palace of King Kasyapa and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The climb takes about 3–3½ hours and offers a fascinating journey through ancient water gardens, the Boulder Garden, the famous Mirror Wall, colorful frescoes, the Lion’s Paw entrance, and finally the summit with breathtaking views. For a comfortable experience, it is recommended to climb early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat, wearing light clothing and comfortable walking shoes. After the visit, continue your journey to Knuckles (123 km / approx. 4 hours 10 minutes).
Early in the morning at 05:30 AM, begin an exciting cycling adventure in the Knuckles Mountain Range. You will be picked up from your hotel in Kandy and transferred about 25 km to the starting point. The ride begins with a scenic downhill through the Knuckles Forest Reserve, passing beautiful landscapes and a natural swimming pool for a short break. The route then includes a challenging climb followed by forest trails and gravel paths. Along the way, enjoy a traditional village lunch and continue to Corbett’s Gap, where you can admire breathtaking panoramic views. After a tea break at the base camp, continue the ride toward Hunnasgiriya, where the tour ends. You will then return to your hotel in Kandy. Evening at leisure.
After breakfast, travel to Kandy (46 km / approx. 2 hours 10 minutes) and enjoy a short city tour of this UNESCO World Heritage city, once the last royal capital of Sri Lanka. During the tour, explore the lively Kandy Bazaar, the scenic Kandy Lake, and experience the unique atmosphere of this historic hill city. Afterwards, continue to Kitulgala (60 km / approx. 2 hours 15 minutes) for an exciting white water rafting adventure on the Kelani River. This thrilling activity lasts about 1½–2 hours and takes you through several Grade 2 and 3 rapids such as Killer Falls and Butter Crunch. Later, proceed to Nallathanniya (47 km / approx. 2 hours 10 minutes). In the evening you may relax before beginning the midnight climb of Adam’s Peak, a sacred 2,243 m mountain famous for the “Sacred Footprint” at its summit. The hike begins around 1:45 AM, with rest stops along the way, reaching the top in time to witness the breathtaking sunrise from the summit.
After witnessing the sunrise at Adam’s Peak, begin the descent via the Murray Estate route, reaching the base around 6:15 AM. Enjoy breakfast before visiting a nearby waterfall and taking time for a short photography session. You will reach the trailhead around 9:30 AM. Afterwards, continue to Nuwara Eliya (68 km / approx. 2 hours 30 minutes), with a scenic stop to view the beautiful St. Clair’s Waterfall along the way. In the afternoon, enjoy a short city tour of Nuwara Eliya, often called “Little England”, once a favorite hill station of the British. Highlights include the old brick Post Office, Grand Hotel, English church, golf course and Hill Club, the old town, central market, Gregory Lake, and the racecourse.
Early in the morning at 05:30 AM, travel to Horton Plains National Park, where a naturalist will provide a short briefing about the route and the hike. The trek to Kirigalpotha, the highest peak in the park and the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka accessible to the public, begins around 06:45 AM. This challenging 7 km one-way trail takes you through grassy plains, cloud forests, marshy areas, and steep rocky terrain. The trek usually takes about 10–11 hours in total, including rest stops, refreshments, and a lunch break. Along the way, you may encounter wildlife such as Sambar deer, Sri Lankan leopards, and several endemic bird species. After reaching the summit around midday and enjoying time for photography and lunch, begin the descent and return to the trailhead by around 5:30 PM.
After an early breakfast, proceed to Pattipola Railway Station, the highest railway station in Sri Lanka. The Rail Hike begins around 7:45 AM and takes approximately 5–6 hours, covering a scenic 14 km trail along the railway line. The hike leads through beautiful mountain landscapes and forest areas toward the border of Horton Plains National Park. Along the way, you will pass a historic railway tunnel built in 1919, the third longest and highest elevated tunnel in Sri Lanka. The route includes regular rest stops and refreshments before reaching Ohiya Railway Station around 1:00 PM. From there, you will be picked up and continue your journey to Ella. An optional train ride from Bandarawela to Demodara is also available for those who wish to enjoy one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic rail journeys.
After breakfast, enjoy a scenic trek to Diyaluma Waterfalls with a picnic lunch. Located in the Badulla District, Diyaluma is one of the tallest waterfalls in Sri Lanka and offers breathtaking views and natural infinity pools at the upper falls. The trek usually takes about 1–2 hours and includes short hiking trails leading to beautiful viewpoints and refreshing swimming spots. The hike is suitable for most travelers, though comfortable walking shoes are recommended. In the evening, visit the famous Nine Arch Bridge and enjoy a short hike to Little Adam’s Peak, where you can admire stunning views of the surrounding hills and tea plantations.
After breakfast at 08:00 AM, begin your hike along Pekoe Trail Stages 15 and 16, from Makulella to Demodara. Stage 15 starts near the peaceful Allimale Bodhiya Temple in Makulella and leads through eucalyptus forests, tea plantations, and jungle paths, offering stunning views of the Ambagaswatte Valley. A highlight of this stage is the climb to Ella Rock, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Little Adam’s Peak and the surrounding mountains before descending toward Ella via Kithal Ella Railway Station. Stage 16 continues from Ella town, passing through the Ella Forest Reserve and the famous Nine Arches Bridge, then through lush tea estates before ending at Demodara Railway Station, known for the unique Demodara Loop. After completing the hike, continue your journey to Sinharaja (150 km / approx. 4 hours 30 minutes).
Early in the morning at 06:00 AM, proceed to the Sinharaja Rainforest for a guided trekking and birdwatching experience. After a short briefing about the forest and its nature trails, the trek begins around 6:15 AM. The hike takes you through dense tropical rainforest rich in biodiversity, where you can spot rare birds, endemic wildlife, and unique plant species while enjoying opportunities for photography. During the trek you will visit the bird research center and enjoy light refreshments along the way. The walk usually lasts about 5–6 hours, returning to the forest entrance around 11:45 AM. Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve, is one of Sri Lanka’s most important biodiversity hotspots, covering over 11,000 hectares of lush rainforest. The afternoon will be at leisure.
After breakfast, travel to Colombo (121 km / approx. 3 hours) and check in to your hotel. In the evening, relax and unwind with a 60-minute full body massage, a perfect way to refresh after the adventure-filled journey.
After breakfast, proceed to the airport for your departure, marking the end of your memorable journey in Sri Lanka.
